Our Take 

Within the New Balance line the 860 has been a reliable training shoe for the runner who is looking for moderate levels of stability mile after mile.  But this year those miles just got a bit more comfortable.  With a  completely revamped midsole, upper and outsole, the 860 is still targeting the runner who needs some stability, but it just got more comfortable. 

Introducing a reworked dual-density Fresh Foam X midsole with additional foam underfoot, the 860 provides the runner with a softer top layer of foam for extra cushioning and comfort while the firmer bottom layer ensures an efficient, responsive and stable ride.  Furthermore, between these two layers is the new stability plane which is a new EVA film technology that provides both general integrity to the shoe while also encouraging a strong toe off and limiting over-pronation.
